Inspiring story Yamikani House
Yamikani House background
This year all our operations are currently based in Malawi. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and poverty is an overwhelming problem.
It is estimated that 82% of the population in the country live under the poverty line.
In Blantyre, approximately 1 in 4 people are HIV–positive (National AIDS Commission, 2002) and over a third of Malawi’s children have lost one parent.
There has been 75% increase in adult deaths over the last ten years and between 800,000 and 1.2 million Malawian children are HIV/AIDS orphans.
As the number of orphans in Malawi increases more children are becoming heads of the households, forcing many to drop out of school, beg on the streets, or risk economic exploitation as they engage in hard and often hazardous work. In the traditional extended family children are the responsibility of the whole family, but these family structures have been weakened thus leaving children to fend for themselves.
